Nora is an award-winning Iranian-Australian writer/director. She holds a Bachelor Degree in Architecture from the University of Technology, Sydney and a Masters in Film & Television from the Victorian College of the Arts (VCA).
Nora started her career making documentaries in Lebanon and Chile. In 2011, her short documentary BEIRUT, UNDER THE BRIDGE was awarded ‘Best Director Documentary’ and ‘Special Jury Prize Documentary’ at the 11th Beirut International Film Festival and in 2017, her mid-length documentary, CASA ANTÚNEZ (ANTÚNEZ HOUSE) competed in the Official Selection of the Sheffield Doc/Fest (New Talent Award Nominee).
To date, Nora has made three narrative shorts about the Iranian Diaspora which have competed in film festivals worldwide, these include, WATERFALL, THE PHOENIX (SIMORGH) and 17 YEARS AND A DAY.
In 2015, Nora was mentored by Iranian master filmmaker Abbas Kiarostami in his Barcelona workshop. Her short HIGH TIDE was selected in Kiarostami’s top 10 films to screen at international film festivals. Later that year, THE PHOENIX (Simorgh) was nominated for an Australian Director’s Guild (ADG) Award for Best Student Film and Nora participated in Melbourne International Film Festival’s prestigious Accelerator program for emerging Australian/NZ directors.
In 2016/2017 she completed a screenwriting mentorship with Cannes-award winning auteur Michael Rowe as well as two director’s attachments, with Emma Freeman on the Matchbox Pictures/Netflix Series SECRET CITY and with Ian Barry on December Media/ABC TV’s THE DOCTOR BLAKE MYSTERIES.
In 2019, her episodic writing credits include Matchbox Pictures/ABC TV Series THE HEIGHTS (Series 2) and Thumper Pictures’ Sci-Fi Web Series SECOND TIME.
Nora’s debut feature screenplay, SHAYDA is in development with Porchlight Films (ANIMAL KINGDOM, THE KING) and Film Victoria. She is currently working with American producer Gary Foster (SLEEPLESS IN SEATTLE, DENIAL) on a feature film adaptation of an Iranian-American novel.
TÂM is her latest short film project and will be released in 2020.
